Quick Answer
How do I add a signature to Google Sheets?
Go to formesign.com/signature-in-google-sheets, paste your Sheet's link, and click Add signature. Pick the Sheet in Google's file picker and choose the tab to sign. Add each signer, choose Link or Email, and share. Whoever opens the link clicks Request signature and enters the signer's email. The signer reviews the tab and signs, and you get a signed PDF.
Sheet signature is for when the spreadsheet is the document: a quotation, a purchase request, a timesheet. Signers see the contents of one tab and sign it.
We'll use a Purchase request Sheet with two tabs: the request itself, and some internal notes that signers shouldn't see.
Looking for something else?
To send form responses into a spreadsheet, you want Link to Sheets. That's a different feature.
Prepare the tab
Signers only see the tab you pick, so make it stand on its own:
- Include the title, reference number, people, amounts, and dates.
- Check that totals display as values you'd be happy to sign.
- Move internal notes and unrelated data to another tab.
Create the request
Paste your Sheet's link
Open formesign.com/signature-in-google-sheets. Paste the link, or click Browse, then click Add signature.
Connect the Sheet
Even with a pasted link, Formesign needs you to confirm the file. On Let's connect your sheet, click Next, allow access if Google asks, then choose your Sheet in Google's file picker and click Select.
Formesign only gets access to the Sheet you pick.
Choose the tab
If your Sheet has more than one tab, Formesign asks Which tab do you want signed? Pick one and click Next. A Sheet with one tab skips this.
Add the signers
Under To be signed by, type each signer's role, such as Manager, in signing order. Check the role before moving on: if the box suggests a word, pressing Tab can add it to what you typed. Click Next.
Choose how to request signatures
Link gives you a link your team can use to collect signatures. Email sends directly to signers. Start with Link to test it. Click Next.
Test it
At Your signing link is ready, click Preview signing experience, and check that the tab reads correctly. Then share it.
What people see
Opening the link shows the tab as a table, with a REQUEST SIGNATURE button. EXPAND shows a wide table in full.
- The person with the link clicks REQUEST SIGNATURE. There's nothing for them to sign.
- Formesign asks Enter the approver's email. They enter it and click Proceed.
- The signer gets a Review & sign email, and sees the same table with their name, email, and signature below it.
- A card appears on the SIGNED PDF tab, showing 1 pending until they sign.
What this does and doesn't do
| It does | It doesn't |
|---|---|
| Turn the tab you pick into a signing document | Send one request per row |
| Remember the setup when you return to the same Sheet | Write signatures back into cells |
| Produce a signed PDF | Keep the signing document live as cells change |
If you change the Sheet, reopen the signing request and check it before sending it to anyone else.
If the Sheet can't be read
Sign in with an account that can open the Sheet, and allow pop-ups for formesign.com so Google's picker can open. If your organization blocks this, ask your administrator rather than making the Sheet public.
