Quick Answer

How do I collect signatures on a Google Doc?

Install the Formesign add-on for Google Docs, open your document, and open Formesign from the add-ons menu. Click Proceed. Formesign converts the Doc into a signable PDF with placeholder fields and opens a new tab, where you review the fields and share the signing link.

The add-on starts in Google Docs, but you finish on formesign.com. Signers sign a PDF of your document, so their signatures don't appear in the Doc itself.

Before you start

  • Write the document the way you want it signed, with a clear blank for each answer and a signature line for each signer.
  • Keep a copy of the wording you've had approved.
  • Keep it to 6 pages or fewer if the signed copy must keep the original layout.

Convert your document

Open the add-on

Find the add-on from the Document signature page. Once installed, open your Doc and start Formesign from the Docs add-ons menu.

Click Proceed

The sidebar explains: We will convert your Google Doc into a signable PDF with placeholder fields. Signers review your document, fill in the fields, and sign. Click Proceed.

Continue in the new tab

A new tab opens on formesign.com and the sidebar says Continue in the new tab. If nothing opens, allow pop-ups for Google Docs and try again.

Review the fields

From here it works like uploading a PDF: check that every box is in the right place, then click Proceed.

Review 1 answer boxes and 2 signature boxes, then 4 Proceed.

If Formesign can't read your document

Your organization may block access. The add-on then shows We couldn't read your document, and offers another route:

  1. Click Download this Doc as a PDF.
  2. Click Upload on formesign.com and upload the PDF.

You get the same result, and you don't need to change any sharing settings.

Don't make the document public

There's no need to, and it exposes your document. Use the PDF route, or ask your Workspace administrator about the add-on.

When you change the document

Changing the Doc doesn't update a signing form you've already created. Convert it again, and treat the new one as a new form. Requests already signed keep the wording that people actually signed.
